Social media recently blew up with the idea that David Ayer would be releasing his director’s cut of Suicide Squad, colloquially known as the Ayer Cut, after the release of a number of behind-the-scenes materials. However, the director has come out to confirm the rumors are just rumors.

Suicide Squad was seemingly of the DC films most affected by studio interference during its time. David Ayer has come out to say the movie that was released was nothing like the film he shot, with the director sharing a number of images from his original vision throughout the years. Following speculation that he was going to release the Ayer Cut soon, the director confirmed it won’t be coming out anytime soon:

“There’s a genuine curiosity and interest from a lot of people,” Ayer wrote on Twitter. “And I’m aware of there is another group of people that have fun mocking the film. Your comment is a perfect example of how many are magnetically drawn discussion to the 2016 film in a negative way. Have you ever had an experience in life that didn’t until the way you wanted, that dragged you, that made you rethink everything? I have. All I know is my unseen film plays much better than the studio release. The interest in my cut being [shown] seems real and organic. And [James] Gunn told me it would have it’s time to be shared. He absolutely deserves to launch to launch his DC universe without more drama about old projects. In a way I’m chained to this thing. I’m riding a tiger here and navigating this situation the best I can. Life is a very strange journey.”

At the very least, it seems as though the release of David Ayer’s version of Suicide Squad is on the table with James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios, which is more than could be said about the Snydercut movement. Only time will tell if fans will ever actually see the Ayer Cut, but at the very least it seems that time won’t come for a while.

A new era for the DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran now in charge of DC’s film, television and animations efforts at Warner Bros. Discovery, bringing the company’s comic book-related assets under one roof. Gunn is said to be focusing on the creative direction of the DCU while Safran is handling things that are related to business and production.

Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with both DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
