A new report has confirmed that Superman and Lois was canceled because of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe reboot.
Fans were shocked when it was announced last year that Superman and Lois would be coming to a close in an abridged final season. The show was one of the biggest critical hits the DC Universe had had in a while and even pulled relatively sound numbers. A new interview with Brad Schwartz, The CW Network’s president of entertainment, revealed the show was ultimately canceled so as to not conflict with James Gunn’s Superman movie: “[Warner Bros. Discovery] don’t want a competing Superman product in the marketplace,” according to Schwartz.
While a disappointing truth to learn, it does make sense from a business perspective. Warner Bros. is all in on James Gunn’s Superman to save the DC brand in the eyes of fans. It makes sense to not want to confuse audiences about the reboot’s continuity with a competing universe.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, all four projects struggling at the box office. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
