Maxwell Lord may be a bigger influence on the DC Universe than fans thought! New details have been revealed about Sean Gunn’s take on the character and Hawkgirl’s LordTech suit in Superman.
Despite how hyped fans are for Superman and the heroes of the new DC Universe, one aspect of the film has been clowned on to no end: Hawkgirl’s suit. Many have defended it as being bland due to its creation by Maxwell Lord and LordTech, but it’s an argument that hasn’t won everyone over. Yet according to actress Isabela Merced, it’s a costume that serves a very specific purpose in the film.
“Well, there have been some leaked pictures online,” Merced explained to Deadline on the red carpet of Alien: Romulus. “However, I think James [Gunn] knows what he wants, and this specific suit is for this specific timeline in the story. I don’t know what else I can say, but I gotta say, the helmet was my absolute favorite. It’s so sick. It’s so badass. It’s perfect.”
While Isabela Merced wasn’t able to say much about Hawkgirl’s LordTech suit, she was certainly able to level with fans by talking about her love for the helmet in Superman. It seems to be the only part of her costume in the DC Universe that people can agree is good! However, her words do imply that Maxwell Lord may be involved in the timeline of the film in some form. And, if Sean Gunn is to be believed, it may be a very different take on the character than ever before.
Sean Gunn Speaks On His Role As Maxwell Lord
It hasn’t been confirmed that Maxwell Lord will even appear in Superman. However, given how prominent the LordTech logo is on Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl suit, it’s likely the character will make his debut alongside the rest of the DC Universe. When asked about the villainous billionaire, Sean Gunn explained that his take on the character will be much different than any before it.
“I can’t talk too much about it,” Sean Gunn told The Wrap at Fan Expo Chicago. “I can say that my brother James and I did discuss what reference materials from the canon were relevant to to my process. I love doing my own music.”
“I can’t say that much, other than we did talk about relevant materials,” He continued. “And we discussed the character in detail on before I dove in. We referenced, no live performances of the character. It’s all from written materials with things that we figure we’re looking at.”
It’s a shame Sean Gunn didn’t even look at Pedro Pascal’s take on Maxwell Lord in Wonder Woman 1984, given it was one of the few portrayals in the old DC Universe many found perfect. Yet it’s clear that the brotherly duo has a clear vision for the villain. While he may or may not appear physically in Superman, it’s clear LordTech sponsoring Hawkgirl’s suit is only just the beginning of his influence.
Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
