Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi has taken to social media to defend his comedic reimagining of Chris Hemsworth’s Asgardian Avenger.

Taika Waititi had his work cut out for him when he took on the job of directing Thor: Ragnarok and was tasked with making Thor interesting. The thunder god’s first two solo entries in the MCU had not exactly lived up to the standard set by other Avengers’ solo films.

The director ultimately took Thor in a more comedic direction, tapping into the inherent silliness of the wild world of Marvel’s space viking. However, while Thor: Ragnarok received much love from fans and critics, some fans feel the director has gone a step too far with Love and Thunder.

The Case For Funny Thor

Taika Waititi has shown his dedication to a funnier take on Thor on Twitter, retweeting a response to a tweet that said Thor “wouldn’t joke.” An earlier response from that same user had claimed Love and Thunder “made thor [sic] into a moron.”

The response retweeted by Taika Waititi shared a pair of comic panels in which Thor and Luke Cage engage in a dance-off. It is one of many instances in which Thor has shown his more lighthearted side in the comics.

As a bawdy, beer-drinking, godly fish-out-of-water, Thor has never been one of Marvel’s most serious characters.

Taika Waititi is obviously standing by his take on Thor and, for the most part, fans would surely agree that a Thor with a sense of humor makes for more nuanced and enjoyable viewing than the bland take on the character offered up in 2013’s The Dark World.

As films such as Jojo Rabbit have shown, Taika Waititi is a master of combining comedy with a heartfelt story. Oftentimes, the comedy in Waititi’s work is a carefully employed dramatic tool, designed to help further define his characters. It has certainly elevated Thor.

Here is the synopsis for Thor: Love and Thunder:

The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the Thor solo film stars Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Taika Waititi, Russell Crowe, Natalie Portman, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.
