Taika Waititi Wants To Follow New Characters In His ‘Star Wars’ Film

Waititi's project will be the next Star Wars film to hit theaters.

Taika Waititi shared some new insight on his plans for the Star Wars film he’s developing.

While Lucasfilm is delivering non-stop television shows by way of Disney Plus, their theatrical slate has been scarce as of late. It was announced initially that Rogue Squadron from Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins would be the next Star Wars film to hit theaters, but Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that the film from Taika Waititi will now arrive first.

Taikia Waititi’s project was first announced in 2020, and the director recently shared that he is still writing his Star Wars film. In an interview with Total Film, Waititi talked more about his approach to the Star Wars franchise and the need to expand beyond the Skywalker Saga:

“Look, I think for the Star Wars universe to expand, it has to expand. I don’t think that I’m any use in the Star Wars universe making a film where everyone’s like, ‘Oh great, well that’s the blueprints to the Millennium Falcon, ah that’s Chewbacca’s grandmother.’ That all stands alone, that’s great, though I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like it’s a very small story.”

The End of the Skywalkers

Takia Waititi’s comments are similar to what Kevin Feige said about his film. The majority of Star Wars projects to date have followed the Skywalker family in one way or another. Even The Mandalorian brought in Luke Skywalker at the end of its second season. The franchise has also become known for constantly revisiting the desert planet of Tatooine.

The Acolyte will be the first of what appears to be several future Star Wars projects from Lucasfilm that will not rely on the franchise’s legacy characters and instead create new ones. One area where we see this come to fruition is with the High Republic era, which is starting to expand into other mediums beyond literature. Kathleen Kennedy has also teased that future films will move forward and explore the time after the sequel trilogy.

Here is the synopsis for Taika Waititi’s next film, Thor: Love and Thunder:

The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, and Russell Crowe.

Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters on July 8, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film, and subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
