The Batman was one of the most highly-acclaimed superhero films released in the past decade, and Matt Reeves reveals he has one goal for the film’s sequel.
Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman was a return to form for fans of the Caped Crusader who wanted a much more grounded take on the character. Matt Reeves, Robert Pattinson and the rest of the crew delivered one stellar Elseworlds project, earning it a sequel and at least one spin-off with Max’s The Penguin. When talking about this sequel on the Team Deakins podcast, Reeves revealed his only goal for the sequel.
“I’ve had so many wonderful collaborators to work with and when you find someone who you love working with, you just wanna … ‘Come on, please, let’s keep working together … How much farther can we push it’, said Reeves. “I’ve been talking to [The Batman cinematographer Greig Fraser] about — I’m trying to write the next movie now with my partner, and we’re doing this thing — and he’s, like, going, ‘Let’s just push it farther.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, that would be really exciting to do.”
There are countless ways that Matt Reeves and the rest of his crew could push The Batman Part II even further. From upping the stakes to increasing the surrealism to even doing the unthinkable in adding a Robin to a Batman film, only time will tell how Reeves will evolve Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader even further.
The future of the Batman series
The first movie ended with Batman apprehending the Riddler, who has flooded Gotham City, though details about Part II are currently scarce. Matt Reeves is co-writing the script of the sequel with Mattson Tomlin.
The heads of DC Studios recently revealed that The Batman: Part II is set to hit theaters on October 2025. The first movie earned $770.8 million at the worldwide box office, a figure that makes it the seventh highest-grossing movie of 2022.
