Will he be a hero or villain?

DC Universe fans rejoice! The Boys and Breaking Bad star Giancarlo Esposito has confirmed he’s had talks with James Gunn for a role in a future DC Studios project.

Fans have practically been begging for Giancarlo Esposito to join Marvel or DC Studios since he first played Gus Fring on Breaking Bad, with those cries only becoming louder as Esposito dipped his toes in other science fiction franchises like The Boys and The Mandalorian. It seems as though fans’ prayers have finally been answered, with Esposito confirming during a recent event he’s spoken with James Gunn about joining the DC Universe prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike:

“I had been talking to James Gunn about the possibility about being in a movie [before the strike],” Esposito explained at a recent event. “So who knows, it could happen soon.”

Giancarlo Esposito also mentioned that he specifically wanted to play a hero instead of a villain. Given James Gunn has mentioned being far from casting characters like Batman, Esposito’s role is likely in a DC Studios project with a completed script, suggesting he may appear in Superman: Legacy or potentially Waller. While fans would likely want him to don a cape in the DC Universe, it’s more likely he will take on a role like Perry White, Superman’s boss, given his past roles in shows like The Boys.

The future of the DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.

Shazam! Fury of the GodsThe Flash, and Blue Beetle have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom still slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
