‘The Flash’ Director Opens Up About Sequel Plans & Ezra Miller Recovery

Is The Flash done for?

The Flash is set to speed its way to theaters this June, with early reviews raving about the film’s quality. Despite many fans considering the DC Universe film a guaranteed hit, director Andy Muschietti has revealed there are currently no talks for a sequel.

A potential sequel for The Flash has been the subject of debate since before the film was first screened. Even if the film turns out well, many fans wonder if Ezra Miller’s recent controversies may discount them from returning to the role of Barry Allen. Other fans wonder if the DCU’s soft reboot may incentivize DC studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran to recast the character for their own plans. When Andy Muschietti was asked about if there were any plans for a sequel at CinemaCon, he admitted that he has high hopes, but no guarantees:

“We didn’t talk about it,” he explained. “I think that we’re all waiting to see how this movie does. Of course, there’s excitement about continuing the story, especially if this movie’s successful. Of course, there’s an architecture in DC that is brewing, and it’s being created. And the question is, will this new architecture absorb this story? The good thing about the multiverse is that it is possible. The multiverse allows all of these different worlds to coexist and interact. And so hopefully, yes. We don’t know yet. That’s the truth.”

Andy Muschietti also opened up about the troubles of Ezra Miller. While many fans were turned off from the film entirely due to their actions last year, Muschietti assured fans that Miller is committed to fixing their mental health:

Ezra is well now,” he stated. “We’re all hoping that they get better. They’re taking the steps to recovery. They’re dealing with mental health issues, but they’re well. We talked to them not too long ago, and they’re very committed to getting better.”

Ezra Miller would be far from the only celebrity to make a comeback with a massive film following massive public backlash. Robert Downey Jr. was famously considered washed up before turning his life around with Iron Man. Even James Gunn was fired from Disney due to past controversial comments before landing on his feet at DC. While Miller’s case is obviously more severe than either of the above mentioned, only time will tell if they’ll be able to make just as severe of a comeback.

The Flash’s DC Universe future

Warner Bros. Discovery already has a script for a potential sequel to The Flash, written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, the man behind the two Aquaman movies starring Jason Momoa. However, James Gunn and Peter Safran did not discuss the Flash sequel during their DC Universe presentation.

Directed by Andy Muschietti from a script written by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson, The Flash is inspired by the Flashpoint comic book storyline, which followed Barry Allen as he navigated an altered DC Universe. Written by Geoff Johns and penciled by Andy Kuber, Flashpoint radically altered the status of the DC Comics universe and led to the launch of the New 52 titles.

In addition to Ezra Miller, The Flash also features Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck as two separate versions of Batman, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, Maribel Verdú as Nora Allen, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Antje Traue as Faora-Ul and Sasha Calle as Supergirl. Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Rudy Mancuso and Luke Brandon Field are also on board in undisclosed roles.
