The Flash has been mired in controversy for years due to the actions of the film’s star Ezra Miller. Michael Shannon, who plays General Zod in the film, has spoken up about the difficulties of talking about these types of situations.
It’s no secret to anyone that The Flash star Ezra Miller has had a troubled history as of late. As press for the film goes into full swing ahead of its release this June, Michael Shannon addresses the star’s controversies in a recent interview, saying that he’s heard about them even in spite of not paying much attention to the news:
“But I hear there’s been some—I’ve gotta admit, I’m not looking at the trades every morning, keeping my finger on the pulse of things, but I know there’s been some issues,” He told Vanity Fair. “It seems like they’re ready to let it out.”
Despite hearing about the controversies, Michael Shannon wants to give Ezra Miller some slack, saying that they were very kind to him on set and that he feels for them during this troubled time:
“If you’re talking about Ezra [Miller], I thought Ezra was lovely—very kind to me when I was there,” Shannon continued. “It’s difficult to talk about, but I always give people a lot of slack in this business, because there’s a lot of people in this business that have issues. And some people have more privacy than others. Any time somebody is out in the spotlight getting picked on, I feel for them. Even if it’s warranted, it’s still a horrible situation.”
It’s currently unclear if Ezra Miller’s struggles will keep them from reprising their role as The Flash in the future of the DC Universe. Despite this, people close to the actor like director Andy Mushcietti insist that they’re committed to their rehabilitation. While some fans may give Miller the slack that Michael Shannon gave them, for others these actions may be too little too late.
The Flash’s DC Universe future
Warner Bros. Discovery already has a script for a potential sequel to The Flash, written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, the man behind the two Aquaman movies starring Jason Momoa. However, James Gunn and Peter Safran did not discuss the Flash sequel during their DC Universe presentation.
Directed by Andy Muschietti from a script written by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson, The Flash is inspired by the Flashpoint comic book storyline, which followed Barry Allen as he navigated an altered DC Universe. Written by Geoff Johns and penciled by Andy Kuber, Flashpoint radically altered the status of the DC Comics universe and led to the launch of the New 52 titles.
In addition to Ezra Miller, The Flash also features Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck as two separate versions of Batman, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, Maribel Verdú as Nora Allen, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Antje Traue as Faora-Ul and Sasha Calle as Supergirl. Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Rudy Mancuso and Luke Brandon Field are also on board in undisclosed roles.
