James Gunn revealed that The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will exclude this integral character.
Marvel Studios’ Phase 4 will be coming to an end later this year with the theatrical release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. But the year won’t end without Disney Plus’ upcoming The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which director James Gunn acknowledged will be the epilogue of Phase 4.
The special will take place after the events of Thor: Love and Thunder and before the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. With that in mind, some are curious as to which characters will be appearing and which will not, given both the Holiday Special and Vol. 3 were filmed around the same time. Well, James Gunn confirmed on his official Twitter that Gamora (Zoe Saldana) will not be appearing:
Where is Gamora?
Given that the Holiday Special is set after the events of Thor: Love and Thunder, and right before Vol. 3, it makes sense that Gamora won’t appear. The footage of Vol. 3 that screened exclusively at Comic-Con showed fans that she went off to lead the Ravagers, and Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) is still dealing with the trauma of losing her in Avengers: Infinity War. Naturally, this is a different scenario given that this variant of Gamora lived a different life than the version he fell in love with, given that Thanos (Josh Brolin) sacrificed her life to retrieve the soul stone.
The Guardians recently appeared in Thor: Love and Thunder. Here is the synopsis:
The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the Thor solo film stars Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Taika Waititi, Russell Crowe, Natalie Portman, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.
Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder is now playing in theaters. Meanwhile, James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters on May 5, 2023.
