Avengers: Infinity War saw half of the Marvel Cinematic Universe wiped away by Thanos’ snap, with the titular heroes powerless to stop it. However, The Marvels director Nia DaCosta says they could have saved almost everyone, and it’s Captain America’s fault they didn’t.
One of the key points of Captain America’s story in Avengers: Infinity War was his refusal to trade lives, insisting that they couldn’t destroy Vision’s Mind Stone to stop Thanos as it would mean the Synthezoid’s death. According to The Marvels director Nia DaCosta, this was the wrong choice, insisting that Captain America is at fault for the snap after not killing Vision.
“So, here’s the thing: the reason why it’s his fault is the reason why he’s such an amazing hero, because he’s like, ‘We’re not gonna sacrifice anyone. There always has to be another way.’ He was incorrect,” DaCosta told the Phase Zero podcast. “But then also, he was right in the end, ’cause everything was fine.”
“We did lose some people that we care about, but it is his fault, because he should’ve just ripped that thing out of his homie’s head from the beginning.”
“But then, again, that’s what makes him such a good character, and I think some of the amazing success of that first part of the MCU was those characters were so true to themselves, and they made sense. All of the decisions that they made, even if you didn’t agree with them, they made perfect sense to who they were. So, even though I blame him, I understand him.”
Arguments of morality have always stood at the heart of superhero movies. Even in Avengers: Infinity War, the central question posed by Thanos is a warped perception of utilitarianism. Whether fans agree with The Marvels director or not, Nia DaCosta certainly brings a valid moral argument against Captain America. However, it’s those arguments that make the character so strong in the first place.
The talent behind The Marvels
The Marvels is set to be a groundbreaking film in many ways. Not only does it feature three powerful female superheroes, but it also has a female director, Nia DaCosta, who previously directed the horror flick Candyman. The movie features a cast that includes Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-joon, Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff, and Mohan Kapur.
“She has a really calm vibe, too,” Iman Vellani said about DaCosta. “These movies are not easy to make at all. There’s like a million, bajillion little moving pieces. She and [executive producer] Mary [Livanos] did such a great job to keep morale high. Even if there were days where they wanted to rip people’s heads off, they would never show it and never put their stress on anyone else.”
In addition to directing The Marvels, Nia DaCosta also co-wrote the script alongside Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik, and Zeb Wells. During an interview, DaCosta described the movie as being “full comic book madness,” teasing what audiences can expect from the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe project.
