‘The Penguin’ Producer Matt Reeves And Showrunner Lauren LeFranc Confirm Talks For Season 2

Will The Penguin get a season 2?

Colin Farrell The Penguin HBO Max Series The Batman

The Penguin may not be over quite yet! Producer Matt Reeves and showrunner Lauren LeFranc have revealed that there are discussions about a second series of the HBO series.

Much like The Batman before it, The Penguin turned out to be a surprise smash hit. The series was considered to be one of the best of the fall season, with Colin Farrell’s role in the project even landing him a win at the Golden Globes. This has led many to hope that the project may be picked up for a second season, despite originally being pitched by Matt Reeves and Lauren LeFranc as a limited series.

While it’s not usual for limited series to get picked up for a season 2, fans of The Penguin may have some hope yet. During an appearance at the Golden Globes red carpet, Matt Reeves confirmed that there have been talks about bringing the show back for a second season. However, they’re still trying to figure out what that would look like in the context of the larger universe of The Batman.

“Well we are talking about doing another season. Lauren and Dylan and I and Colin are talking about what we would do.” Reeves told The Hollywood Reporter. “And it’s really about coming up with the right idea and also about the timing. You know, we’re doing The Batman Part II and so how all of that fits together. But we’re really excited about doing another season and we’re just going to have to figure out exactly the right idea.”

The Penguin Showrunner Teases Season 2

Matt Reeves wasn’t the only one with some words to say about the possibility of The Penguin getting a season 2. Showrunner Lauren LeFranc also made an appearance at the Golden Globes to represent the series. Her own words were much more coy compared to her producer, but teased that the door was “always open” if they could find the right idea.

“I mean, you know, I wrote it as a limited series,” LeFranc told The Hollywood Reporter. “We’re here today and it’s nominated for that. I don’t know. I love these characters. I think the world has incredible opportunity. If we can figure out the right thing and feel like we can outdo ourselves, there’s always that door that’s open. I don’t know, I’m really proud of the season that we made.”

With Oz Cobb now taking on his traditional role as a crime kingpin in Gotham, it’s unclear where The Penguin would take the character in a season 2. It’s possible that Matt Reeves and Lauren LeFranc would lean into his comic book roots for a continuation, or bring in more mob bosses to try to play on the mobster vibes established by their freshman outing.

The Penguin is now streaming on HBO. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe and make sure to stay tuned to our YouTube channel for more content.
