‘The Witcher’ Seasons 4 & 5 To Be Filmed Back-To-Back With Liam Hemsworth

The Witcher is coming fast!

After nearly two years, Henry Cavill is set to return as The Witcher for his third and final season. With Liam Hemsworth set to take up the role as Geralt of Rivia, the show’s casting director Sophie Holland  teases a much shorter wait between seasons.

It was reported late last year that, after five years and three seasons, Henry Cavill would be leaving The Witcher following its third outing, which is hitting Netflix on June 29. While that announcement led many people to believe the show would likely end without his involvement, it was quickly revealed that The Hunger Games alumn Liam Hemsworth would be taking up the mantle of Geralt of Rivia for the show’s fourth season.

Despite the positive reception to The Witcher, it was unclear how long Netflix planned the show to last following the recasting of Geralt of Rivia with Liam Hemsworth. Following a number of rumors about a potential fifth season being shot not long after the show’s confirmed fourth, casting director Sophie Holland confirmed in an interview that the project will have a fifth season filmed almost immediately after season four wraps production:

“We’re just about to start filming on season four with Liam Hemsworth and there will be a short gap then we go straight into season five,” Holland told Deadline.

This news shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone familiar with Netflix’s business practices, often investing wide in dozens of projects before cancelling all the others to focus on one. The move is also likely a play to maintain interest in The Witcher without the star-power of Henry Cavill by making the wait between seasons shorter. It’s currently unclear how much longer the show will last with Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia, but given that Netflix’s biggest show Stranger Things is ending after season 5, it’s not likely he’ll hold the role longer than Cavill.

The future of Netflix’s The Witcher series

The third season of The Witcher is currently scheduled to hit Netflix in Summer 2023. The series has already been renewed for a fourth season, with Henry Cavill being replaced by Australian actor Liam Hemsworth, best known for his work in the Hunger Games series and the Independence Day sequel.

The first two seasons of The Witcher are currently available to stream on Netlfix. Based on the series of books by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski and developed for television by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, The Witcher also stars Anya Chalotra, Freya Allan and Joey Batey.
