Director Taika Waititi addressed whether or not Tom Hiddleston’s Loki will return for Thor: Love and Thunder.

While Tom Hiddleston has portrayed Loki in all three chapters of the Thor film series, it seemed like the fan-favorite character’s time in the MCU had come to end after he met his demise in Avengers: Infinity War. However, a new version of Loki from the year 2012 was introduced after our heroes inadvertently altered the past in Avengers: Endgame and some fans have wondered if this meant Tom Hiddleston could return for the fourth Thor film.

During a live online viewing party for Thor: Ragnarok, director Taika Waititi briefly addressed the topic of Tom Hiddleston’s Loki returning, telling fans, “Oh, ye… I can’t say.” As he tried to figure what he is allowed to say on the subject, Taika Waititi described the type of conversation he would have with Marvel to make sure his ideas didn’t interfere with their overall plans:

“If I had wanted to kill Loki for some reason, I would ask about it and Marvel might have told me that they needed him for Infinity War. That’s how I usually find out about the stuff that’s coming up.”

Full details on the plot for Love and Thunder are currently under wraps, though the film will be based on Jason Aaron’s Mighty Thor comic book run, in which Jane Foster becomes the new Thor. Directed by Taika Waititi from a script he co-wrote with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, and Christian Bale.

Meanwhile, Tom Hiddleston will return as Loki in a standalone series centered on the God of Mischief for Disney Plus:

In Marvel Studios’ “Loki,” the mercurial villain Loki (Tom Hiddleston) resumes his role as the God of Mischief in a new series that takes place after the events of “Avengers: Endgame.”

Directed by Kate Herron with Michael Waldron serving as head writer, the series stars Tom Hiddleston, Sophia Di Martino, Owen Wilson, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw.

Loki will premiere exclusively on Disney Plus in early 2021 and Thor: Love and Thunder is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on February 18, 2022.
