Disney Plus Reveals Attempt To Fix Ridiculed ‘Thor: Love And Thunder’ VFX

Has this change improved things?

Thor: Love and Thunder Chris Hemsworth

Thor: Love and Thunder has made its streaming debut for Disney Plus Day, bringing with it an attempt at fixing one of the Marvel movie’s most ridiculed VFX moments.

The fourth entry in Marvel Studios’ Thor series received mixed reactions from fans, with Taika Waititi’s comedic take on Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder sparking debate. However, one of the other aspects of the film that irked some fans was one particular visual effects shot.

Taking the opportunity to adapt to fans’ feedback, Marvel has apparently modified the scene for Thor: Love and Thunder‘s Disney Plus release, but some fans are less than convinced by the results.

Marvel Adjusts That Floating Head

In the Disney Plus version of Thor: Love and Thunder, the scene involving Axl contacting Thor has been reworked to improve a much-derided visual effect.

Axl is the son of Idris Elba’s Heimdall, who died back in Avengers: Infinity War. One scene in Love and Thunder sees the young Asgardian reaching out to contact Thor after he and Asgard’s other children have been kidnapped. When he does so, he appears before Thor as a disembodied floating head.

The visual effect in the original cut of the film came under fire from fans online, who claimed it look surprisingly cheap for a movie of Love and Thunder‘s budget. Now, the reworked version has faced similar criticism.

This comes after Taika Waititi previously came under fire for criticizing Love and Thunder‘s VFX in a shot of CGI character Korg. Following earlier reports of the stressful and unforgiving working conditions placed on VFX artists working on Marvel productions, it’s surprising to see fans now partake in that same criticism.

Here is the synopsis for Thor: Love and Thunder:

The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the Thor sequel stars Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Taika Waititi, Russell Crowe, Natalie Portman, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.
