The Tom Cruise sequel Top Gun: Maverick crossed the $500 million mark at the U.S. box office.

Paramount Pictures has quite a lot to celebrate with 2022. After several years of struggling at the box office compared to competitors such as Disney, Universal, and Warner Bros., the studio has had a consistent string of success thanks to Scream, Jackass Forever, The Lost City, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and of course, Tom Cruise’s long-awaited sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.

Top Gun: Maverick has become the most successful film in Tom Cruise‘s filmography, and has also dethroned Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as the highest-grossing film at the U.S. box office in 2022 so far. In an age where the MCU has become the most dominant force in blockbusters today, that is quite the feat. Now, this sequel has crossed yet another stunning milestone: the $500 million mark at the U.S. box office.

On its fifth Friday, Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick earned $8.25 million. This is a 26% drop from last Friday, and brings the film to around $499.472 million, guaranteeing its inevitable crossing of the $500 million mark domestically by the end of today.

Enviable word-of-mouth.

Top Gun: Maverick seems to have everything going for it in regards to its incredible success. Of course, it being a legacy sequel to an iconic 1986 film, as well as a blockbuster starring Tom Cruise, who is perhaps one of the last true marquee movie stars helps. However, the film’s universal acclaim from critics and audiences alike have certainly catapulted it into the stratosphere with its box office numbers. The film is currently expected to vie for the top spot against Elvis, and looks to soar above competitors such as Jurassic World Dominion and Lightyear – both of which opened in theaters weeks after Paramount Pictures’ sequel.

Here is the synopsis for Tom Cruise’s sequel:

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.” Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski from a script written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie, based on a story by Peter Craig and Justin Marks, Top Gun: Maverick stars Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Ed Harris.
