Is Tom Hardy’s time as Venom truly over? The actor speaks on if he’d ever return to his iconic role to face off against Spider-Man on the silver screen.
There are a lot of missed opportunities in the world of superhero movies. Brandon Routh never making his return as Superman on the silver screen. Ben Affleck never getting a proper Batman movie. The entirety of the Fox X-Men franchise. However, there’s perhaps not a single on bigger than the fact that Tom Hardy’s Venom never met a single version of Spider-Man during his trilogy.
As Tom Hardy himself has said, the two got as close as they possible could without actually meeting. Venom literally stared at Spider-Man on a television in the post-credits scene of his second movie. However, be it due to studio politics or scheduling conflicts, the duo never got the chance to properly trade blows. This left the trilogy, for better or worse, almost entirely disconnected from the comics they were based on.
Will Tom Hardy Return As Venom?
Though given the films were at least a moderate success, fans have been wondering if Tom Hardy has truly hung up the symbiote for good. When speaking about his most recent project, Mobland, with ComicBook.com, the actor was asked if a Spider-Man crossover would be the only thing to get him back as Venom. Surprisingly, the actor seemed much more open to a return than most fans would have expected given the end of the prior film.
“No, no. I love Venom,” Hardy explained when speaking about whether a Spider-Man cameo would be the only thing to get him back in the saddle. “And I had a great time doing that, so no.”
This is certainly interesting, given Tom Hardy was previously very vocal about the last Venom film being his final stand with the character. Is it possible that he had a change of heart? Or, rather, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are already collaborating regarding his role in a future Spider-Man film. It’s a long shot, to be sure, but so was that entire franchise. So nothing can be written off quite yet.
