Top Gun: Maverick has officially passed Avengers: Infinity War at the US box office.
When it comes to the summer of 2022, perhaps no blockbuster has been celebrated more than Top Gun: Maverick. The film, which stars Tom Cruise returning to one of his most iconic characters has continued to perform above and beyond expectations, and has been the definitive winner at the box office. Now, the film can celebrate another victory: passing Avengers: Infinity War.
As of August 20, 2022, Top Gun: Maverick grossed an impressive $679.07 million, passing Avengers: Infinity War, which grossed $678.8 million in 2018. The Tom Cruise film is now the sixth highest-grossing film of all-time at the domestic box office, right behind Black Panther, Avatar, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Avengers: Endgame, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Summer winds down, Tom Cruise reigns.
Along with passing Avengers: Infinity War, seeing how high the Tom Cruise sequel continues to soar is quite astonishing. In particular, summer 2022 blockbusters have brought a lot of excitement and crowds into theaters again. Films such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Jurassic World Dominion, Minions: Rise of Gru, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Elvis have all brought in some impressive numbers, which certainly bodes well for the industry’s recovery following a rough two years.
