Tom Cruise’s ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Passes ‘Titanic’ As Biggest Paramount U.S. Release

Sorry Leo, Tom's the King of the World now!

Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick has passed Titanic to become Paramount Pictures’ highest-grossing film in U.S. history.

When it comes to the current summer blockbuster season, many predicted that the reigning box office champion would likely be one of the two major Marvel Studios films: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness or the recently released Thor: Love and Thunder. Perhaps even Jurassic World Dominion would’ve been a good bet. However, to the surprise of many, Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick reigns supreme. In an already-exceptional 2022 for Paramount Pictures, the long-awaited sequel is the studio’s crown achievement in many years, and it has now crossed perhaps its biggest milestone yet at the box office.

Currently at $606 million at the U.S. box office, Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick has surpassed James Cameron’s Titanic as Paramount Pictures’ highest-grossing domestic release of all-time. The Tom Cruise sequel also sits at an additional $602.5 million internationally, bringing its current total to $1.2 billion worldwide.

Will Paramount greenlight a sequel?

Given the success of Top Gun: Maverick now that it has surpassed Titanic as the new king of the world , some are speculating whether or not we will see Tom Cruise return for a third film. Miles Teller, who plays Lt. Bradley Bradshaw AKA “Rooster” in the film, said the following when asked about a sequel with Paramount by ET Online:

“That would be great, but that’s all up to TC. It’s all up to Tom. I’ve been having some conversations with him about it. We’ll see.”

Here is the synopsis for Top Gun: Maverick:

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.” Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski from a script written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie, based on a story by Peter Craig and Justin Marks, Top Gun: Maverick stars Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris and Val Kilmer.
