Why did Marvel suddenly decide to make its Netflix shows canon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Vincent D’Onofrio explained the decision while discussing the new passion being put behind Daredevil: Born Again.
Following Vincent D’Onofrio’s outing as Kingpin in Echo, it was officially revealed that the Marvel Netflix shows were officially canon to both the series and the MCU. This came as a shock to many people, as until now, Marvel has been treated as an entirely separate canon. The reason for this, according to D’Onofrio, is because the new creative team behind Daredevil: Born Again insisted the revival stays directly connected to the original series.
“During our restart of all the creative on Daredevil: Born Again, all the creatives got together and said, ‘Look, this is how we’ve got to do it now.'” D’Onofrio told The Hollywood Reporter. “So we are for sure only speaking about it in terms of being directly connected to the original Daredevil, and that’s a great thing. It brings in a lot of cool stories and all the collateral story that happened in those original three seasons.”
While it was already confirmed characters like Jon Bernthal’s Punisher would return in Daredevil: Born Again, this new change means other characters from the Marvel Netflix shows could appear in the MCU, including Mike Colter’s Luke Cage and Finn Jones’ Iron Fist. Though whether or not this choice serves as a second wind for The Defenders, or just sets up some fun Easter eggs, is yet to be seen.
What to expect from the new Daredevil series
Marvel Studios recently scrapped the entire creative team for Daredevil: Born Again due to internal criticism. The previous incarnation of the show focused mainly on the legal aspects of Matt Murdock, with the hero not suiting up until episode 4. The series is expected to go through a complete creative rework to focus more on action and violence, just like the Netflix version.
Little is known of Daredevil: Born Again, with plot details being kept under wraps. Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, Sandrine Holt, Margarita Levieva, Michael Gandolfini, Nikki M. James, and Michael Gaston are set to appear in the series opposite Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, a.k.a Kingpin.
Daredevil: Born Again currently has no release date for Disney Plus. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
