Kingpin Star Vincent D’Onofrio Reveals Why Netflix Cancelled Daredevil

Disney Plus gets the blame.

Kingpin star Vincent D’Onofrio has confirmed that Disney Plus was the reason Netflix’s Daredevil was canceled.

While it seemed to be the underlying cause, it appears clearer than ever that Netflix and Marvel’s decision to cancel Daredevil and a medley of other shows was due to Disney Plus. The Disney-backed streaming service has allowed Marvel Studios to create serialized stories set directly within the Marvel Cinematic Universe – something the Netflix shows never quite excelled at.

Kevin Feige’s Marvel Studios was never directly involved with Marvel Television, which directly spearheaded the shows on Netflix. With Disney Plus, Feige and Disney were able to bring everything under one umbrella that encompassed the MCU. While the cancellations were disappointing, Daredevil and Kingpin have been folded into the MCU through Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hawkeye, respectively.

In a recent conversation with Marvel News Desk, Kingpin star Vincent D’Onofrio opened up about Daredevil‘s cancelation and how the cast and crew felt at the time of the announcement.

“I don’t think any of us were okay. I think that we were like, ‘Oh okay, we had a hit show and now it’s gone.’ You know, at the same time the group #SaveDaredevil started to rise, we started to learn the reasons why that happened and so we understood what Marvel was doing because Disney+ coming out.”

“You know when you’re in this business a long time like we have all been, it kind of made sense business-wise. What didn’t make sense to us was why we wouldn’t continue that show or the idea of how that worked and how well it worked. Conceptually, I think we were disappointed but I think we all understood what was going on and it was sort of was inevitable.”

It’s unclear what the future holds for Vincent D’Onofrio and Daredevil star Charlie Cox. Rumors suggest that both will appear in future Marvel projects, though it remains to be seen if fellow Netflix Marvel stars get the same treatment down the road.
