After James Gunn was announced to be taking over as co-chair of DC Studios with Peter Safran, the future of many of DC’s projects were left up in the air as the studio culled projects like a potential Man of Steel sequel to fit a new cohesive vision. According to a new rumor, one of these projects is said to have been a new Batman Beyond animated movie.
This rumor comes from Jeff Sneider’s The Hot Mic podcast. According to Sneider, the film is said to have been written by Daniel Casey, co-writer of Fast 9, as Warner Bros and DC’s answer to Sony’s wildly-successful Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse:
“The following project was commissioned by Walter Hamada. It was, as far as I know, never reported. As of this minute, the project is in development at DC…Daniel Casey, the writer of Fast 9, wrote a Batman Beyond movie, but the catch wasn’t that it was live action, because that was what Christina Hodson was working on. It was an animated Batman Beyond, to be DC’s answer to Into the Spider-Verse.”
This animated film also wasn’t the only Batman Beyond film in development. Sneider referred to a live-action film being worked on by Christina Hodson that was rumored to have been in the works before being killed by Gunn and Safran. This film would have featured Michael Keaton’s Batman after his upcoming appearance in The Flash. Further rumors also hinted that this film would have continued Keaton’s romance with Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman from Batman Returns. It’s yet to be revealed whether this animated movie will follow the same fate as its live-action counterpart.
Who else is attached to the Flash movie?
Directed by Andy Muschietti from a script written by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson, The Flash is inspired by the Flashpoint comic book storyline, which followed Barry Allen as he navigated an altered DC Universe. Written by Geoff Johns and penciled by Andy Kuber, Flashpoint radically altered the status of the DC Comics universe and led to the launch of the New 52 titles.
In addition to Ezra Miller and Michael Keaton, The Flash also features Ben Affleck as another version of Batman, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, Maribel Verdú as Nora Allen, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Antje Traue as Faora-Ul and Sasha Calle as Supergirl. Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Rudy Mancuso and Luke Brandon Field are also on board in undisclosed roles.
