Original Blade actor Wesley Snipes recently responded to a question about whether he would make an appearance in the MCU’s reboot of the franchise, starring Mahershala Ali.
Wesley Snipes first appeared as Marvel’s vampire-slaying Daywalker in 1998’s Blade, going on to reprise the role in its two sequels in 2002 and 2004. His appearances as the character predate the beginnings of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and now Blade is being reimagined as a part of that broader Marvel franchise. While Mahershala Ali will be the one donning the character’s signature shades and leather jacket, some fans might be wondering if Snipes could have a cameo role.
Will Wesley Snipes’ Blade Rise From The Grave?
The MCU has recently started to explore the multiverse, with characters from past franchises and alternate versions of current characters appearing in films such as Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This could potentially open the door to Wesley Snipes’ Blade crossing paths with Mahershala Ali’s version of the character. Alternatively, it’s possible Snipes could cameo in another role, as a nod to his iteration of Blade.
Unfortunately, however, it sounds like Marvel Studios is not looking into either of these avenues just yet. When asked about whether he had been contacted about appearing in the MCU’s Blade during an interview with ComicBook.com, Wesley Snipes said:
“No, not as of yet. I’m still working on my acting skills. So when I come up as an actor, maybe they’ll reach out and say, ‘Let’s have a conversation,’ or maybe they don’t feel I’m ensemble player.”
It sounds like Wesley Snipes isn’t expecting to return to the Blade franchise any time soon, but the actor appears to be keeping a good sense of humor about any potential future with Marvel Studios, joking that he is “still working on [his] acting skills.” Perhaps Marvel will consider bringing Snipes back in a future Blade sequel, after Mahershala Ali’s version of the character has been established.
Mahershala Ali’s Blade last appeared in Eternals. Here is the synopsis for the film:
The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.
Chloe Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Angelina Jolie as Thena, Harry Styles as Starfox, and Mahershala Ali as Blade.
