Are DC’s video games in trouble? A new report spells that the upcoming Wonder Woman game may be struggling, alongside news about cancelled projects based on The Flash and Constantine.
For a time, there was genuine hope that DC would once again come to retake their throne as the king of licensed video games. Back in 2021, it was announced that a Wonder Woman game was officially in development. This was alongside a new game in the Arkham universe set to release in 2022. Though this optimism didn’t last for long, as Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League would come out to universal condemnation. There’s also been almost no news about the Wonder Woman game, leaving many fans to worry about its current state.
These fears seem to be entirely warranted. A new report by Bloomberg suggests that the Wonder Woman game may be in trouble. The article reveals that DC has already dumped over $100 million into the project, despite it being years away from release. Development was reportedly rebooted with a new director being brought on. However, there’s currently still no certainty that the game ever fully releases, and may end up being cancelled.
DC’s Cancelled Flash And Constantine Games
Yet Wonder Woman wasn’t the only game DC had in development in recent years. In the same article, it was revealed that WB Games Montreal Studios, the developers of the universally panned Gotham Knights, tried to get a new project off the ground. A number of ideas were thrown out, with the team originally pitching a game based on Constantine. However, no work was officially done on the project, even as management remained noncommittal on the idea.
The Montreal Studio were eventually pushed to making a game on a more popular character, with the two frontrunners being The Flash and Joker. Choosing to go with the Scarlet Speedster, development began on the project sometime during late 2022 or early 2023. Yet when The Flash movie bombed in June of 2023, the plug was pulled on the project, leading to it being officially cancelled by the studio.
