Could Randy Orton have really been Cable? The WWE Superstar speaks on his failed Marvel audition against Josh Brolin in Deadpool 2.

While Deadpool 2 had its issues, fans unanimously loved Josh Brolin’s portrayal of Cable in the film. However, it seems he wasn’t always meant to play the role. While speaking about his history of auditions in Hollywood, current champion and WWE Superstar Randy Orton reveals he was originally up for the role of the time-traveling mutant.

“So, I do auditions here and there. I remember I got an audition early on when I finally got some representation in that industry,” Orton told TheRingReport in a recent interview. “I think Deadpool 2? Cable. I read for Cable and in my head, boy, I was gonna be Cable. I was gonna be Cable. And I was like, ‘This is it.'”

“Nope, no callback. No nothing. Yeah, thanks. Josh Brolin gets it. Of course Josh Brolin gets it [and] kills it. I think I realised then, ‘Oh, okay, I can send in these auditions but I’m a pro wrestler.’ I really enjoy being a pro wrestler and everything it’s given me. I don’t think I’ll ever leave this place [WWE].”

It’s certainly interesting to imagine a world where Randy Orton ended up playing Cable in Deadpool 2. However, given how well Josh Brolin nailed the role and Orton’s seeming comfort in the WWE, it seems Marvel made the right choice when it came to casting the iconic character.

Cable’s Strange History In The Deadpool Franchise

Randy Orton wasn’t the only actor left on the cutting room floor when it came to casting Cable. According to the director of Deadpool 2 David Leitch, Brad Pitt was originally set to take the role. However, due to the actor’s busy schedule, the role went to Josh Brolin and Pitt settled to making a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo as The Vanisher.

Yet it seemed, that no matter who took the role, be it Randy Orton, Brad Pitt, or Josh Brolin, the character was meant to stay in Deadpool 2. Cable was almost entirely absent from Deadpool and Wolverine, leaving many fans to hope that the character makes a comeback in a future Marvel project. However, given the Merc with a Mouth is now folded into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s no telling which supporting characters get the axe.

Deadpool and Wolverine is in theaters now. Deadpool 2 is currently streaming on Disney Plus. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
