The Falcon and The Winter Soldier‘s John Walker actor, Wyatt Russell, has responded to rumors that he is set to reprise his Marvel role for 2024’s Thunderbolts.
Confirmed to be the final movie in Marvel’s Phase 5 at last weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con, Thunderbolts will bring the villainous Marvel team of the same name to the big screen. Effectively Marvel’s anti-Avengers, the Thunderbolts are a team of supposedly reformed supervillains.
While the team’s line-up has changed over the years in Marvel comics, Wyatt Russell’s John Walker/U.S. Agent seems to have been set up as a central member of the MCU’s Thunderbolts.
U.S. Agent Returns?
While The Falcon and The Winter Soldier seemed to end on a tease that John Walker would be joining the Thunderbolts, Wyatt Russell has said he is yet to hear anything from Marvel.
In The Falcon and The Winter Soldier‘s final episode, John Walker was seen sporting a new black suit for Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who dubbed him U.S. Agent. The scene certainly seemed to suggest “Val” was about to bring Walker into a wider team.
Speaking to The Digitial Fix recently, Wyatt Russell was asked whether he had had the call to come back for Thunderbolts yet. The actor responded:
“No, I’m still waiting. I know they’re doing it. I know that they’re planning it. I gotta imagine that there’s something in there for me. But yeah, until you get that true actual prompt, like, ‘Okay, this is your start date. And this is when you’re coming, and this is when you rent your house, and this is when logistically you need to start setting up to do these things.’ That’s when I shift my mindset to going to do that, you know? Other than that, before you get that call, things can change on a dime; you never know.”
Of course, had Russell heard from Marvel, his answer would presumably be much the same, thanks to the studio’s strict anti-spoiler policies. While speaking about Thunderbolts at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige did promise a casting announcement was on the way, though it is not yet clear when fans should expect this.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is available now on Disney Plus. Here’s the official synopsis:
