Wyatt Russell Is Unsure If He’ll Return To Marvel Role For ‘Thunderbolts’

Marvel keeps its secrets

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier actor Wyatt Russell is not sure if he will return as John Walker/US Agent for Thunderbolts.

Last year Wyatt Russell made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as John Walker in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Despite the character’s morally dubious comic book background and a mixed response to his first scene, the series ultimately revealed that he was a guy who meant well even if he was completely out of his depth. At the end of the series, he took on the identity of US Agent while the Captain America mantel went to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson. Many have wondered, however, when the character would appear again.

Earlier this month it was revealed that Marvel Studios was developing a Thunderbolts film. In the comics the Thunderbolts is traditionally a team led by Captain America antagonist Baron Zemo that is usually made up of reformed Marvel antagonists. The MCU has seemingly been setting up this team with characters like Baron Zemo, Yelena Belova, Ghost, Taskmaster, The Abomination, US Agent, and Winter Soldier all having more prominent roles in the MCU. However, Wyatt Russell is unsure if the plans for the upcoming film include him.

While speaking to The Playlist, Wyatt Russell broke down why he didn’t know if he was coming back for Thunderbolts. Specifically, he noted how Marvel Studios keeps these secrets close to the chest and how actors don’t often know if they are involved until the studio itself announces it:

“No, I’m just waiting on it. You wait on it until, like, they announce it. They keep it really, really tight, and it’s like, you respect that because they’ve got other bottom lines to look out for than what they think I need to know.”

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is available now on Disney Plus. Here’s the official synopsis:

Following the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) team up in a global adventure that tests their abilities—and their patience—in Marvel Studios’ “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.”

Directed by Kari Skogland from scripts written by showrunner Malcolm Spellman and Derek Kolstad, the series stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson / Falcon, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes / The Winter Soldier, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, Daniel Brühl as Baron Helmut Zemo, and Wyatt Russell as John Walker / U.S. Agent. Actors Desmond Chiam, Miki Ishikawa, Noah Mills, and Carl Lumbly have also been cast.
