The X-Men are ushering in a new era for the MCU! Kevin Feige reveals that the mutants will be taking center stage after Avengers: Secret Wars.
Many view Avengers: Secret Wars as the chance for a new start in the MCU. The universe, and a superhero genre as a whole, has been struggling for the past few years. Some fans believe the chance for a soft reboot could be exactly what Marvel needs to get back on track. It seems Kevin Feige is in agreement, with him recently speaking on how the X-Men fill be the studio’s new focus after the end of the multiverse saga.
“I think you will see that continues in our next few movies with some X-Men players that you might recognize,” Feige explained during a recent talk at Disney’s APAC Content Showcase in Singapore. Right after that, the whole story of Secret Wars really leads us into a new age of mutants and of the X-Men. Again, [it’s] one of those dreams come true. We finally have the X-Men back.”
It certainly makes sense that the MCU would pivot to an age of mutants after Avengers: Secret Wars. The X-Men have been one of Marvel’s most popular franchise’s since their inception. In fact, Kevin Feige himself got his start working as an associate producer on the first X-Men film in 2000. His soft spot for the super team has always been clear and, if nothing else, it’s heartwarming to see his dreams finally become a reality.
How Avengers: Secret Wars Will Set Up The X-Men
It’s not hard to notice that mutants have been all but absent from the MCU aside from very small cameos in recent years. While this is because Marvel’s tangled web of film rights born out of financial struggles in the 90s, it does give Kevin Feige a gaping hole to fill with Avengers: Secret Wars given so much of what makes the X-Men the X-Men is how ubiquitous mutants are in the universe.
Luckily, the very conceit of Avengers: Secret Wars has always been the merging of realities together. Kevin Feige likely planned the multiverse saga, intentionally or not, as a way to reboot the MCU in a way that keeps everything they’ve done well while still allowing the X-Men to appear in their future. There’s no certainty Marvel’s future will be good, but it will certainly be X-ceptional!
