X-Men Producer Is Unsure New Mutants Will Get Theatrical Release

X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner seems unsure of New Mutants seeing its silver screen debut.

Shuler Donner was speaking at the TCA’s for FX’s Legion panel and she was asked about the future of several X-Men franchises such as Gambit, Legion and the New Mutants. These characters and their future appearances are still somewhat of a question mark because no one really knows what will happen to them after the FOX/Disney deal is finalized.

Regarding the New Mutants film, the X-Men producer was hesitant to confirm its theatrical debut, which is set for August 2nd later this year. The movie was already delayed earlier last year. She seemed hopeful that the film would get a theatrical debut, but at the same time very unsure. She also spoke about the possibility of it releasing on Hulu, but absolutely hated the idea:

“I want to see it released (theatrically), I’d hate to see it thrown at Hulu.”

New Mutants is not the only Marvel franchise that’s in a weird limbo. The X-Men, Fantastic Four, Deadpool, X-Force, Gambit, the Marvel licensed Netflix series like Daredevil, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage, are all on hold until the FOX/Disney merger happens. Even the MCU is waiting for what happens in that deal so Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios can finally include those shared characters in that universe officially.

Do you think New Mutants will see the light of day this year? Comment down below!

Directed by Josh Boone from a script co-written by Knate Lee, The New Mutants stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin / Magik, Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair / Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie / Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa / Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar / Mirage, and Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes.

Held in a secret facility against their will, five new mutants have to battle the dangers of their powers, as well as the sins of their past. They aren’t out to save the world — they’re just trying to save themselves.

The New Mutants is scheduled to be released in theaters on August 2, 2019.
