The cast of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is expanding! Multiple new Marvel heroes are confirmed for the series, along with a surprising addition from the Runaways.
Marvel fans have been keeping a close eye on Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man ever since it was announced. The Web-Head has had a mixed past with animation, especially under the Disney brand. However, it seems that the new series is keeping things simple, with head writer Jeff Trammell assuring fans its a story that sticks to the character’s roots.
“You know, I want to give a cliche, ‘Expect the unexpected’ answer but, honestly, I think you can expect Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” Trammell told the Official Marvel Podcast. “He’s hanging around New York; it’s not a huge intergalactic adventure. It’s him at his roots and there are a lot of things we, as a fanbase, take at first glance and are like, ‘Oh yeah, I know this part of the story.’ That’s been really fun to dig into.”
“Maybe you don’t know everything. There are some surprises in there and I’m really excited to dig into those. It was really fun to subvert those expectations when they’ve been built up for so long.”
It’s interesting that Marvel is taking a centrist approach when crafting Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Most animated adaptations of the hero either stick religiously close to one source material, or throw everything out to make something completely unrecognizable to the comics. However, it seems the series plans to take more than just inspiration from the original books.
The Cast Of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Expands
Fans knew that Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man would have an interesting roster of heroes ever since it was announced. While previous reports have indicated that Runaways characters and other young heroes would appear on the show, a lack of updates by Marvel left many wondering if the heroes were left on the cutting room floor. Yet it seems the roster has only expanded as the show continued deeper into production.
“There are so many characters that aren’t prototypical Spider-Man characters that we got to introduce in this series. The big one is Nico Minoru of the Runaways. I’m a huge fan of that series and Nico. I’m very excited that she’s in our show.”
“There’s Pearl Pangan, Lonnie Lincoln…there’s a few characters we’re familiar with from other series as well as Spider-Man classic characters we’re excited to mix it up with. I’ll also say, Amadaes Cho and Jeanne Foucault will appear in our series. There’s a lot of cross-pollination from the comics within this world I’m excited to dig into.”
While it’s nice to see Nico Minoru return after their mainstream breakout in the Runaways show on Hulu, Jeff Trammell is truly digging into the bin of obscurity for some of the other characters. Most Marvel fans are at least familiar with the Hulk prodigy Amadeus Cho, but the appearance of Jeanne Foucault aka Finesse and Pearl Pangan aka Wave confirm that Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will be taking swings fans can’t even begin to expect.
