Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead will get both a Netflix prequel film as well as an anime series based on the upcoming film.

Netflix has announced that Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead will receive a prequel film alongside an anime series based on some of the characters in the upcoming film. Army of the Dead follows a team of mercenaries who set up a heist on a Las Vegas casino during the height of a zombie outbreak, and stars Dave Bautista, Omari Hardwick, Hiroyuki Sanada and Tig Notaro among the group. Notaro recently joined the cast to replace Chris D’Elia after a series of sexual assault allegations were made against the comedian. The prequel film will follow Matthias Schweighöfer’s character, Ludwig Dieter, and will also be directed by the star

Meanwhile the Army of the Dead anime series will follow Dave Bautista’s character, Scott Ward, during the initial outbreak in Las Vegas as his rescue crew face the source of the virus head on. Zack Snyder will direct two of the episodes alongside showrunner Jay Olivia. Anna de la Reguera, Tig Notaro, Omari Hardwick and Ella Purnell will all reprise their roles from the film in the anime series. In a brief statement Zack Snyder explained how excited he is to partner with Netflix to further explore the Army of the Dead‘s world as well as expanding into animation.

“I’m incredibly excited for the opportunity to partner with Netflix again as we expand the Army of the Dead universe with both an international prequel, as well as exploring the visually dynamic world of animation. It’s been a great collaboration and we are thrilled that Netflix sees this as big of an IP as we do.”

Army of the Dead is one of the first projects Zack Snyder has taken upon with his production company The Stone Quarry. Set during a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, Army of the Dead follows a group of mercenaries that venture into a quarantine zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted. Zack Snyder co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten.

In addition to directing Army of the Dead, Zack Snyder is serving as the film’s cinematographer. He’s also producing the picture with his wife and producing partner Deborah Snyder alongside Wesley Coller. Ori Marmur and Andrew Norman are overseeing for Netflix. The film stars Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell Omari Hardwick, Tig Notaro, Hiroyuki Sanada, Garret Dillahunt, Raúl Castillo, Nora Arnezeder, Matthias Schweighöfer, Samantha Win and Rich Cetrone.
