HBO Max is officially set to release Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League which the director has now confirmed may end up releasing in an episodic format on the premium cablers direct to consumer streaming service.

The DC team-up flick which the director stepped down from directing after suffering a family tragedy is going to look very different from the theatrical cut that released in the fall of 2017. After Snyder’s daughter died by suicide, Joss Whedon was ushered in to oversee additional photography and the film’s post-production process, however, what ultimately hit theaters was what insiders referred to as a Frankenstein between the directors.

But now fans will finally get to see Snyder’s vision for the project come to fruition. Over the weekend, Heroic Hollywood revealed that a plan to release Snyder’s cut of the film was in the works. The director confirmed this today at the end of a watch party for Man of Steel, the film which launched the DC extended universe in 2013. The duration of Snyder’s cut, however, remains uncertain. Snyder is currently reassembling the project’s post-production team to cut, score, and finish the film’s visual effect. Members of the cast may also be returning to record additional dialogue for what the director says may end up being a four-hour director’s cut or released as six episodic chapters.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder says the new version of the film will be very different than what fans saw back in 2017:

“It will be an entirely new thing, and, especially talking to those who have seen the released movie, a new experience apart from that movie…you probably saw one-fourth of what I did.”

HBO’s current plan is to release Snyder’s cut of Justice League on HBO Max in 2021. The new streaming service is set to launch on May 27.
