Zendaya On Reinventing Mary Jane Watson In Tom Holland’s ‘Spider-Man’ Films

Zendaya talks about Marvel Studios' take on Mary Jane.

Zendaya recently opened up about reinventing Mary Jane Watson in the recent crop of Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland.

The first two Spider-Man film series dealt heavily with Peter Parker’s relationships with Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy. When Zendaya was first cast in Spider-Man: Homecoming, it was reported that she would be playing the next Mary Jane Watson, but her character would end up going by the name of Michelle. However, it was revealed at the end of Homecoming that Zendaya’s Michelle also went by MJ for Michelle Jones.

Spider-Man: Far From Home explored more of Zendaya’s reinvented Mary Jane Watson and her relationship with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. During a recent conversation with Pose star Mj Rodriguez for Variety, Zendaya talked about bringing her own version of Mary Jane Watson to the Marvel Cinematic Universe:

“I was lucky because they already kind of wanted to re-create the character and turn her into a new version of what I think maybe the original Mary Jane character represented, and just do it in our own way in this Marvel Cinematic Universe. I kind of came into it and there was already on the page a smart, quick, sharp young girl who comes off a bit quirky or offbeat. I have a lot of fun doing it. I like being able to do comedy and things that aren’t so heavy.”
