‘Andor’ Showrunner On K-2SO’s Absence From ‘Star Wars’ Series

K-2SO was originally announced to be part of the series.

Andor K-2SO Star Wars Rogue One Diego Luna

Andor showrunner discussed why K-2SO isn’t featured in the upcoming Star Wars series.

The upcoming new Star Wars series Andor is set to tell the stories of its titular character portrayed by Diego Luna years before the events of Rogue One. Some are a bit surprised to see that the droid K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) won’t be appearing in Season 1 of this series, given that back in 2019, Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk stepped onstage together to discuss the show at D23 Expo.

Well, showrunner Tony Gilroy explained why we won’t be seeing K-2SO in Andor Season 1, and what that might mean for this Star Wars show:

“From a storytelling point of view, there are multiple reasons. I would say, ‘Wait and see.’ It’s a story we are eager to tell. It’s difficult to carry an Imperial droid around with you and not draw all kinds of attention. It’s a difficult piece of luggage. When we do it, we’ll do it in a spectacular fashion as opposed to presenting it and ignoring it, or presenting it or hiding it, or the bad versions we would have been forced to do.”

Andor takes place 5 years before Rogue One.

It’s safe to say that the first season of Andor looks to follow the early years of the Rebel Alliance, and given that K-2SO is an imperial droid, it’s likely that he wasn’t a part of Cassian’s life until a little closer to when the events of Rogue One occurs.

Diego Luna first appeared as Cassian Andor in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Here is the synopsis for the film:

Former scientist Galen Erso lives on a farm with his wife and young daughter, Jyn. His peaceful existence comes crashing down when the evil Orson Krennic takes him away from his beloved family. Many years later, Galen becomes the Empire’s lead engineer for the most powerful weapon in the galaxy, the Death Star. Knowing that her father holds the key to its destruction, Jyn joins forces with a spy and other resistance fighters to steal the space station’s plans for the Rebel Alliance.

Directed by Gareth Edwards from a screenplay co-written by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy based on a story by John Knoll and Gary Whitta, Rogue One stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, with Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is available on Digital HD, Blu-Ray, and DVD, while Andor will hit Disney Plus on September 21, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the series and the future of K-2SO, and subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more great video content!
