Andrew Garfield kept his Spider-Man: No Way Home return a secret from his former co-star Emma Stone.
For an entire year, Academy Award-nominee Andrew Garfield had to keep one of the worst-kept secrets in Hollywood to himself: the fact that he would be making his triumphant return as his version of Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home. In the film, he would join the screen with both Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire in an epic adventure that unites three generations of Spider-Men all at once.
To preserve the secrets, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios opted to keep both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire from marketing materials. Given that secrecy was paramount for Spider-Man: No Way Home, Andrew Garfield in particular sought to keep everything he could to himself. In fact, he even kept it away from some of his closest friends and family, including his former The Amazing Spider-Man co-star Emma Stone.
In a new appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Andrew Garfield was asked about whether or not Emma Stone and/or Marc Webb were aware about his return. In the case for whether or not Emma Stone knew, he revealed that he even held the surprises away from her:
“Emma kept on texting me. She was like, ‘Are you in this new Spider-Man film?’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about!’ She was like, ‘Shut up, just tell me,’ And like, I honestly… I kept it going, even with her, it’s hilarious. And then she saw it and was like, ‘You’re a jerk!'”
The lengths in which Andrew Garfield had to preserve the secrets for an entire year leading up to the film’s release is indicative of his dedication in giving audiences a chance to enjoy the surprises that were in store. The fact that he was even willing to keep this secret from Emma Stone is also quite fascinating, especially since there were rumors that she could’ve possibly returned for the film as well.
Here is the synopsis for Spider-Man: No Way Home:
“For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.”
