Is Marvel finally getting back to basics? Anthony Mackie suggests that Avengers: Doomsday may be bringing an old vibe back to the MCU.
It’s no secret that the MCU is in an odd place in its lifespan. At one point it was the true underdog: a novel idea fueled by nerd properties that brought something fresh to the Hollywood system. Now, after Marvel put out the highest grossing film of all time, they’ve become the system. This has left the franchise without a narrative even as they end their Multiverse Saga with Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars.
What doesn’t help is that Marvel has also put out quite a few commercial and/or critical flops these past few years. Anthony Mackie himself was the face of Captain America: Brave New World, which was mired in controversies and underperformed at the box office (despite still having a healthy gross). This not to mention that Avengers: Doomsday is the first proper crossover film the company has had since Endgame, putting more pressure than ever on the MCU to have a true hit.
Will Avengers: Doomsday Bring Back Old Marvel?
While audiences are more apprehensive about the MCU than ever, Anthony Mackie thinks things are only just now getting started. When speaking about Avengers: Doomsday, the actor teased that the film would bring back the vibe of “old Marvel” that fans have been missing so much. And according to him, he’s not the only actor that’s optimistic about the future of Marvel Studios.
“Yeah, man, we’re kicking on down the road,” Mackie explained to IGN. “So everybody’s getting excited and we’re getting the band back together. We’re supposed to go out this week and we’ll be out there doing it.”
“Everybody’s excited. I feel with the script and having the Russo Brothers back, it’s going to be great. I’m really excited for what this project is going to be. It’s going to give the audience that old Marvel feeling that they always had.”
Avengers: Doomsday certainly has an uphill battle with fans. Even ignoring the current perceptions of the MCU, Marvel has already made a number of controversial decisions with the project that have tainted how fans view it. Most notably, casting Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. While there’s still time to win fans over, one can only hope Anthony Mackie is right about his optimism.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters in May 2026. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
