Arthur Curry proves himself worthy to wear the iconic orange-and-green costume in Warner Bros. and DC’s Aquaman. Don’t read ahead if you want to avoid HEAVY SPOILERS for the movie.

The highly-anticipated DC superhero film Aquaman has finally opened in U.S. theaters and is on its way to an impressive opening weekend gross for the holidays. Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, a character who has to prove himself in quite a few ways throughout the duration of the film. The key to Arthur Curry stopping his brother King Orm (Patrick Wilson) from warring with the land is the Trident of Atlantis.

During the third act of Aquaman, Arthur and Mera (Amber Heard) make their way through the deadly Trench to find themselves on a strange island. On the island, they receive help from a character dressed up as one of the Trench creatures but it’s soon revealed that it’s just a costume and beneath it is none other than Arthur Curry’s mother Atlanna (Nicole Kidman), who was thought to be dead after being sacrificed to the Trench years prior.

Atlanna informs our heroes that the Trident of Atlantis is on the island beyond a waterfall, in the dead hands of King Atlan (Graham McTavish). Fans with a sharp enough eye may have spotted how earlier in the film, flashbacks revealed Atlan to be donning the iconic orange-and-green costume worn by Aquaman in the comics. To obtain the Trident, Arthur has to battle a Smaug-esque creature known as the Karathen (voiced by Julie Andrews). After exchanging a few blows with the creature, our hero uses his ability to control underwater creatures to tame the beast. The Karathen then allows Arthur to grab the Trident, which then causes Atlan’s body to disintegrate.

This leaves only the armor left and that’s when the movie cuts to that iconic trailer shot of Arthur Curry stepping out from behind the waterfall to finally reveal himself as the true Aquaman fans know and love from the comics. Fans who have seen the movie know that this isn’t the last time we see the Karathen. The massive beast helps Aquaman make quite the entrance into the final battle of the film.
