It seems Marvel Studios is focusing on polish! Avengers 5 is dropping Kang from its title amid a creative overhaul that includes rewrites for Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four.
Marvel Studios has faced criticism lately due to a series of movies and television shows with mixed reviews. The new leadership at Disney is paying attention to this feedback and implementing substantial adjustments to the upcoming MCU slate.
The biggest change being undertaken by Marvel Studios seems to be a title change for Avengers: Kang Dynasty to move away from the titular Kang the Conqueror. Many fans have been expecting this change given the recent guilty verdict in Jonathan Major’s assault trial. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has been looking to move away from Kang ever since Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania flopped.
Both of Marvel Studios’ tentpoles next year are also getting touch-ups. The Thunderbolts script is set to be worked on by The Bear showrunner Joanna Calo. Eric Pearson, one of the writers for Thor: Ragnarok and Black Widow, will also have a hand in tweaking the script for The Fantastic Four reboot.
All of this, from the Avengers title change to the script tweaking, seems to be in an attempt to combat the narrative of superhero fatigue. However, with Sony Pictures still releasing films like Madame Web under the Marvel name, audiences may remain split no matter what Marvel Studios tries with its own projects.
The Future of the Avengers Franchise
Avengers 5 is the first movie in a two-part finale to Marvel’s Multiverse Saga. It will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars, rounding out Marvel Studios’ Phase 6.
Destin Daniel Cretton recently made the decision to step down from his role as the director of the upcoming Avengers 5. However, Destin Daniel Cretton’s departure is not an exit from the Marvel family but rather a realignment of his directorial commitments as he’s focused on Wonder Woman and Shang-Chi 2.
Secret Wars is a crossover event that will bring together characters from all across the Marvel multiverse, so Iron Man’s experience and leadership will be invaluable to the Avengers. Michael Waldron is set to write the upcoming Marvel Studios film Avengers: Secret Wars, but a director has yet to be announced.
