Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had an impressive box office opening weekend.
Marvel Studios’ newest film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is looking to continue the box office momentum that was seen from Spider-Man: No Way Home back in December. The new film, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role, has grossed an impressive $185 million domestically, and currently sits at $450 million worldwide.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has broken a few box office records this weekend. This is the biggest opening of 2022 so far, surpassing The Batman, which opened to $134 million. It is also the biggest opening weekend for a Sam Raimi film, beating out 2007’s Spider-Man 3, which opened to $151 million. The film is also a massive jump from the original 2016 film’s opening weekend, which opened to $85 million.
The Benedict Cumberbatch-led sequel grossed the entire box office opening weekend of the original film in roughly one day, and the success of the new film is a testament to how the character went from a relatively obscure Marvel Comics character to one of the MCU’s most popular thanks to his turns in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
