What could have been!

Blue Beetle left fans with a lot of questions about Ted Kord and his place in the DC Universe. However, the film’s director recently revealed scrapped plans for Jaime Reyes and Jenny Kord to meet the hero with a quick cameo.

Blue Beetle is regarded as one of the best DC Studios films in recent years, endearing the world to Jaime Reyes and the titular Scarab. However, fans were left wanting more, especially given how much the film teased Ted Kord’s future appearance in the DC Universe with Jenny Kord. According to the film’s director Angel Manuel Soto, there were scrapped plans for the hero to make a cameo, but he prefers how the final product came out:

“Our initial joke with that was, Jaime and Jenny would be talking later, and he showed up and they [Jaime and Ted] are like, ‘Who are you? That’s your dad?!’ between them,” Angel Manuel Soto told ScreenRant. “But I think by doing it this way opens up more of a curiosity to where is he and why is he sending this message today? Why did he leave? What did he go out to do and I think it opens a lot of doors.”

Angel Manuel Soto would go on to speak on his hopes for the future of the Blue Beetle franchise. Specifically, where he would want to take Ted Kord’s story and how he may end up meeting Jaime Reyes in the future of the DC Universe:

“For me, I always liked the idea of him and Booster Gold doing adventures,” He continued “And then this message being sent as a warning of something that eventually Booster Gold is the one that’s able to bring Jaime into the mix, or tap Kord’s expertise through Booster’s time travelling powers. So for me, one of those things I definitely [want to see] are Booster Gold and Ted Kord, I want them to be a part of Jaime’s future.”

It certainly seems as though Jaime Reyes has a bright future in the DC Universe. Despite underperforming at the box office, it’s confirmed the character will return in the new DC Studios lineup of heroes. Hopefully this time Ted Kord will make his appearance as more than just a cameo!

Who is DC’s Blue Beetle?

Blue Beetle is one of DC’s lesser-known heroes, but he has a dedicated fanbase nonetheless. Created in 1939 by Charles Wojtkowski, Blue Beetle has gone through several iterations over the years. The Jaime Reyes version of the character was introduced during the events of 2006’s Infinite Crisis and quickly became a fan-favorite.

In the pages of DC Comics, Jaime Reyes is a teenager from El Paso, Texas. Jaime discovers a scarab beetle-shaped device that bonds with his body, giving him access to an advanced suit of armor and various powers. He becomes the latest in a long line of Blue Beetles and must learn to balance his newfound abilities with his everyday life.

The full cast of Blue Beetle also includes Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Trujillo, Susan Sarandon and Harvey Guillén.
