Ahead of the release of Thor: Love and Thunder, star Chris Hemsworth and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige have talked about what the future may have in store for Thor.
Thor: Love and Thunder marks the Asgardian Avenger’s fourth solo outing – a first for any MCU hero. With Thor in uncharted waters for an Avenger and being one of the few original team members to emerge from the events of Avengers: Endgame more-or-less unscathed, what the future holds for the character beyond Love and Thunder is not so clear.
Chris Hemsworth has indicated he might be interested in returning to the role beyond Thor’s fourth standalone outing. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige also seems to be open to the idea, saying there are more Thor stories to tell.
More In Store For Thor?
Speaking recently to Total Film, Chris Hemsworth was asked about where he sees his Marvel future going. Hemsworth is one of the few actors to have been in the MCU since Phase 1, first appearing as the Asgardian thunder god in 2011’s Thor. However, he doesn’t seem to be rushing to bow out any time soon.
Talking about further potential Thor sequels after Love and Thunder, Chris Hemsworth revealed he would remain open to the opportunity, but also stated he doesn’t want to outstay his welcome in the MCU:
“Each time, if the opportunity comes up and presents itself, I’m just open to whatever creative exploration can happen, thanks to different writers and directors and so on. But I love playing the character, I really do. It always comes down to: ‘Is this script different to the last one? Are we repeating something?’ And when it becomes too familiar, I think that’s when I’d have to say, ‘Yeah, no, this doesn’t… I think I’ve…’ [laughs] I’d like to exit before people tell me to exit.”
Kevin Feige shared his enthusiasm for seeing more of Chris Hemsworth in the role of Thor, revealing there were many more comic book storylines involving the character that Marvel Studios would be eager to explore on the big screen:
“I know this: there are many, many other Thor stories in the comics that we talk about a lot. And as we watch Chris Hemsworth continue to grow and evolve as a major acting talent, I would be excited to see how he keeps evolving this complex character.”
It sounds like the door remains open to more Thor stories in the MCU’s future. It’s not yet clear where Love and Thunder will leave the character and whether Natalie Portman’s new Mighty Thor will be sticking around in the MCU, but fans won’t have to wait long to find out.
Here is the synopsis for Thor: Love and Thunder:
The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, and Russell Crowe.
