The Warner Bros. CEO has defended the company’s strategy for releasing Christopher Nolan’s Tenet during the ongoing pandemic.

After being delayed due to the pandemic, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet has finally begun releasing in theaters, but many audiences are still unsure about returning while the pandemic continues to cause havoc. But Warner Bros. CEO Ann Sarnoff has defended the company’s decision to stagger the film’s release across the world before the United States. There was earlier speculation about whether the film could release on VOD or HBO Max, but that idea was quickly shot down. Sarnoff spoke to Deadline about the move, explaining that it’s a film that deserves to be seen in theaters.

“I saw the movie for a second time last night, but with an audience and I’m on a cloud. It’s so great on so many levels to be back in theater. It’s a movie that wants to be on a big screen. You look across the hundreds of countries where we debuted Tenet, many more theaters were open in the U.S. and they were craving product. We’ve been analyzing numbers and consumer behavior, so we’ve been studying this since COVID began. We crunched the numbers and figured out a way to make it work. Don’t spend all your money upfront! Pace yourself, it’s a marathon and not a sprint.”

The Warner Bros. CEO also pointed out that they’re not expecting huge numbers from the opening weekend for Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, but noted that she’s excited for audiences in safer areas to see the science-fiction epic on the big screen. It’s unsurprising to learn the film has been incredibly successful overseas, especially with plenty of mystery surrounding the story and the characters involved, with the director himself previously teasing a little of what to expect from Robert Pattinson and Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the film. Take a look at more from the Warner Bros. CEO below.

“Release it, don’t expect a huge opening weekend, but as you know, even though there’s reduced capacity, we’re getting more theaters per location. We felt this was the right thing, until there’s a vaccine, I don’t know how much it’s going to change between now and then. For the markets, where cases are low, and people feel safe to go to movies, I’m excited to give them this amazing movie.”

What do you make of the Warner Bros. CEO’s comments? Have you seen Christopher Nolan’s Tenet yet? Do you think it’s a good idea to venture out to theaters at the moment? Sound-off in the comments below!

Here is the official synopsis for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film Tenet:

“John David Washington is the new Protagonist in Christopher Nolan’s original sci-fi action spectacle “Tenet.” Armed with only one word—Tenet—and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real time. Not time travel. Inversion.”

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, the film stars John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Clémence Poésy, Michael Caine, Kenneth Branagh, and Himesh Patel. Christopher Nolan also serves as a producer alongside his wife Emma Thomas, with Thomas Hayslip on board as an executive producer.
