‘Madame Web’ Set Video Reveals The Marvel Character Dakota Johnson’s Really Playing

Sony's been spinning a web of deceit!

Madame Web Dakota Johnson Spider-Man Doctor Strange

The first set video to show Dakota Johnson filming Madame Web appears to confirm the actress is not playing the Marvel character fans had suspected.

The most well-known version of Madame Web in Marvel’s comic continuity is the elderly Cassandra Webb, a blind clairvoyant with myasthenia gravis, who was permanently connected to a vast life-support machine. However, this may not be the character Dakota Johnson is playing.

In a new Madame Web set video, Dakota Johnson can be seen in a costume that appears to confirm she is in fact playing another Marvel character who took on the Madame Web moniker.

Is Dakota Johnson Playing Julia Carpenter?

The set video shows Dakota Johnson donning a red jacket, similar to the one worn by Julia Carpenter during her time as Marvel’s second Madame Web, perhaps suggesting this is the version of the character she is playing.

Julia Carpenter was originally the hero known as Spider-Woman (one of them, anyway) in Marvel’s comics, before a dying Madame Web passed her abilities onto her. This rendered Julia blind but also gave her Madame Web’s precognitive abilities.

If Dakota Johnson is playing Julia Carpenter in Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff movie, it is not yet clear if this means she will encounter Cassandra Webb or gain her powers another way.

Check out the set video below:

It is possible Madame Web is simply Cassandra Webb’s origin story, with Dakota Johnson playing a younger version of the character, her costume her simply serving as a nod to Julia Carpenter. However, the younger and more physically active Julia does seem to be a more likely protagonist for Madame Web.

Rumors have suggested that Madame Web will in fact be a team-up movie, featuring multiple female spider-powered heroes. Julia Carpenter has joined forces with other spider-heroes in the comics and would probably be more suited to such a task than Cassandra Webb.

Here is the synopsis for Sony’s latest Spider-Man spinoff, Morbius:
