Suicide Squad director David Ayer has expressed his frustrations with not being able to fulfill his vision but also his excitement for James Gunn’s iteration in a series of tweets.
In response to critic David Ehrlich who called out the fan excitement for James Gunn’s upcoming Suicide Squad to be hypocritical after the reception to the original film was muddling, David Ayer responded by saying that he was not able to fulfill his vision. By not being able to do so, he felt as if the comments he has received were unwarranted. However, David Ayer stated that he was excited for James Gunn’s vision for The Suicide Squad.

Thank you for this. The film industry is exactly that – an industry – it keeps growing and moving forward. Yet I know @JamesGunn will make something amazing. My frustration comes from being hammered for something that was not my original vision. https://t.co/CcUGPMORg4

We do have a behind-the-scenes indication that David Ayer’s original vision was tampered with and there were rival cuts of the film being screened to Warner Bros. execs. A decent amount of footage, mostly featuring Jared Leto’s Joker, was cut out of the film, and it was heavily edited. We most likely won’t be seeing David Ayer’s original cut of the film anytime soon, though we do have James Gunn’s version of the Suicide Squad to look forward to.
Just yesterday, James Gunn revealed the cast for The Suicide Squad, which sees Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, and Jai Courtney returning. The film is expected to be a fresh take on the franchise that capitalizes on the best parts of David Ayer’s version, namely a few of the spot-on casting choices.
The first Suicide Squad followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The ensemble cast included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker.
The Suicide Squad will be released in theaters on August 6, 2021. Stay tuned for the latest news on David Ayer, James Gunn and the future of the DC Extended Universe!
