Suicide Squad director David Ayer is defending Jared Leto’s version of the Joker that was in his original script for the 2016 film.
We’ve seen many portrayals of the Joker over the years with two actors now having gone on to win Oscars for playing the iconic Batman villain. When Jared Leto was cast as the Joker for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, many were excited for his performance because the actor already had an Oscar win under his belt.
However, Jared Leto’s Joker is not highly regarded, but David Ayer has been quick to defend the actor and has said a lot of his material was cut from the film. While the theatrical version of Suicide Squad didn’t feature much of Leto’s Joker, Ayer tweeted that his script featured a version that “was rich and dimensional.” You can see Ayer’s full tweet below.
I wrote a perfectly coherent script. And Joker was rich and dimensional. You have been lied to. It’s okay to be angry. ❤️ https://t.co/LVNzXccS5X

Here is the synopsis for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad:
It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?
Written and directed by David Ayer, the film stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, and Scott Eastwood.
