"We invite all of the DC fandoms from across the multiverse — and everyone else as well — into this new universe," Gunn said

DC Studios co-head James Gunn addressed the fans on Sunday and made his first statement about the #SaveLegendsofTomorrow and #ReleasetheAyerCut campaigns that made the rounds on Twitter.

“Opened up Twitter at the end of a long, creative weekend to see the many tweets to #SaveLegendsofTomorrow & #ReleaseTheAyerCut & fan support for other DC projects over the years. The majority of these requests were enthusiastic & respectful,” Gunn said.

Gunn decided to address the fans directly, something not done by the previous regimes. Gunn added: “As the new (& first ever) CEOs of DC Studios, Peter & I think it’s important we acknowledge you, the fans, & let you know we hear your different desires for the pathways forward for DC.”
“Although our ability to interact on Twitter has been lessened due to the workload of our new positions, we are listening & open to everything as we embark on this journey, & will continue to do so for the next few years,” Gunn said. The kicker is that Gunn gave fans a hint of what he and Peter Safran will be up to. “But all our initial focus is on the story going forward, hammering out the new DCU, & telling the Biggest Story Ever Told across multiple films, television shows, & animated projects.”

Gunn invited all the various fans across DC to the new DCU and ended his statement on a cliffhanger. Gunn added: “We invite all of the DC fandoms from across the multiverse — and everyone else as well — into this new universe. We can’t wait to reveal more.”

Last month, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that James Gunn and Peter Safran have signed on to lead its newly-formed DC Studios division, focusing on the overall creative direction of the DC Universe across across film, television and animation.

Gunn and Peter Safran signed a four-year deal to run DC Studios, with the contract making the former exclusive to Warner Bros. Discovery. This means that Gunn won’t be able to work with Marvel Studios until the completion of his duties at DC Studios. His final Marvel project for the time being is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is currently slated to hit theaters in May 2023.

Recently, Gunn revealed that Marvel’s Kevin Feige was the first person he told about his DC Studios role. “Not only do I love Kevin, he was the 1st person I told after I did the deal with DC (John Cena was the 2nd). Contrary to popular belief, a dollar less for Marvel is not a dollar more for DC. DC and Marvel have the common goal of keeping the theater-going experience vibrant and alive,” Gunn wrote on his official Twitter page.

James Gunn’s history with DC and his new role

Prior to his hiring as the co-head of DC Studios, Gunn wrote and directed The Suicide Squad and developed its spin-off series Peacemaker for the WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max. Peacemaker has already been renewed for a second season, which is expected to begin filming next year, but Gunn is aso working on a top secret DC Comics movie.

Gunn is expected to focus on the creative direction of the DC Universe while Peter Safran will handle business and production. They will report directly to Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav and collaborate with Warner Bros. Film Group co-heads Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy.
