It seems the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe changed after all! A surprising DCEU flop managed to top the charts of DVD sales in the UK in 2023.
2023 was a challenging year for the DC Universe. The franchise didn’t go out with a bang, but with four box office bombs that made many fans turn their nose up at superheroes entirely. However, it seems one DCEU film managed to claw its way to the top of the charts, with 2022’s Black Adam becoming the highest-selling DVD in the UK with 80,000 units sold.
This certainly comes as a surprise to some fans, many of whom viewed Black Adam as the death knell of the DCEU, flopping so spectacularly at the box office that The Rock’s plans for the return of Henry Cavill as Superman were scrapped in favor of James Gunn and Peter Safran rebooting the entire DC Universe. With numbers like this, is it possible Dwayne Johnson will return to DC after all?
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, all four projects struggling at the box office. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe after Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom!
