Rumors have been circulating for a while that Mike Flanagan wants to take a crack at the DC Universe. Last year word began to spread that the director had pitched a Clayface movie to James Gunn and Peter Safran, with the project focusing on humanizing the Batman villain in a similar way to the Joker film that made a billion dollars at the box office. Though the same report indicated that the powers that be at DC Studios passed on the proposal.
That hasn’t stopped fans from dreaming about Mike Flanagan joining the DC Universe. He’s a director synonymous with quality horror in the modern age, helming beloved projects such as Hush, Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep. So even if he didn’t get his Clayface film, fans have hoped the line to James Gunn has remained open for another potential project.
Is Mike Flanagan Ready To Join The DC Universe?
Mike Flanagan was asked about reports that he was still in contact with James Gunn following the rejection of his rumored Clayface film. When speaking at the Toronto Fanexpo, the director chose his words carefully when discussing the DC Universe, though ultimately admitted that he would love to work on a project in the world being built by Gunn and Peter Safran.
“I’ve always been a huge fan of James Gunn as a person and filmmaker,” Flanagan told the crowd. “And that is a universe I would absolutely love to be a part of.”
Of course, it’s not clear what project Mike Flanagan would work on if James Gunn does bring him into the fold of the DC Universe. While fans would likely want him to helm the rumored Clayface project, it’s likely the director would handle something more in line with the current plans for DC Studios instead of an Elseworlds story. Though if it’s the time to make wishes, maybe Flanagan can take a crack at Etrigan!
