Does Doctor Doom have beef with Doctor Strange? Benedict Cumberbatch reveals his reaction to Robert Downey Jr.’s surprising return to the MCU.
One of the most shocking moments in MCU history was the reveal that Robert Downey Jr. would officially be making his return, not as Iron Man, but as Doctor Doom. Marvel stars from all across the franchise have shared their thoughts on this decision, from Iron Man alumni like Don Cheadle to new blood like Dominique Thorne. Now it seems Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch is throwing his cloak into the ring to give his thoughts.
Speaking on his role as Doctor Strange in the MCU in a recent profile with Variety, Benedict Cumberbatch was asked about his reaction to Robert Downey Jr. joining the cast of Avengers: Doomsday as Doctor Doom. The actor was seemingly taken aback, sending Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige a hilarious reaction before clarifying his positive feelings about the decision.
“I texted, ‘What the f**k?’” Cumberbatch recalled during the interview when asked about the Doctor Doom reveal at San Diego Comic-Con. “And then quickly added, ‘Good what-the-f**k. I mean, good what-the-f**k.’”
Doctor Strange Vs Doctor Doom In The MCU
Sadly, it seems that Benedict Cumberbatch won’t be trading blows with Robert Downey Jr. anytime soon. In the same interview, the actor confirmed that Doctor Strange will be absent from Avengers: Doomsday due to the film’s story. However, he assured fans he’d be back in the MCU soon with a leading role in Avengers: Secret Wars.
It’s possible, given Benedict Cumberbatch is set to lead the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga, that Doctor Strange will be the one to ultimately take down Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Though given rumors suggest that Avengers: Secret Wars will have a truly star-studded cast, there’s plenty of heroes vying for the top spot in taking down the big bad.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters in May 2026. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
