The new animated film DC League of Super-Pets starring Dwayne Johnson topped the box office in its opening weekend.

As July comes to a close, Warner Bros. Pictures’ latest animated film DC League of Super-Pets tops the box office in its debut. The film, which features the voices of Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart among others, opened to $23 million in its first three days. The film topped last week’s box office champion, Jordan Peele’s sci-fi horror film Nope.

Dwayne Johnson’s first DC film of 2022.

What’s interesting to note is that this animated film opened on the weekend that Dwayne Johnson‘s other DC film, Black Adam, was supposed to open originally before being pushed to October. The success of this animated film for Warner Animation Group bodes well for not just that department, but also audience’s interest in DC characters, which is clearly a priority for new Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, who has expressed that much of the success of this new merger relies on unlocking the full potential of the DC Comics characters.

Dwayne Johnson’s animated film is the second DC Comics film to hit theaters this year. Robert Pattinson’s The Batman opened back in March, and now two more films are set to hit theaters this year in Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods. It will certainly be interesting to see how DC Films continue to perform at the box office in the near future, especially with much of their plans regarding the current state of the DC Extended Universe in particular.

Here is the synopsis for the film:

In “DC League of Super-Pets,” Krypto the Super-Dog and Superman are inseparable best friends, sharing the same superpowers and fighting crime in Metropolis side by side. When Superman and the rest of the Justice League are kidnapped, Krypto must convince a rag-tag shelter pack—Ace the hound, PB the potbellied pig, Merton the turtle and Chip the squirrel—to master their own newfound powers and help him rescue the superheroes.

Directed by Jared Stern and Sam Levine, the film features the voice talents of Dwayne Johnson, John Krasinski, Kevin Hart, Kate McKinnon, Vanessa Bayer, Natasha Lyonne, Diego Luna, Marc Maron, Thomas Middleditch, Ben Schwartz, and Keanu Reeves.

The film is now playing in theaters. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the film’s box office performance, and subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
